The Travel Kit That Stops a Trip Going Wrong

The expensive luggage is rarely what saves a journey. It is usually four or five small, cheap items that solve the problems that actually happen.

Travel gear is sold on the big purchase. The case, the pack, the thing with the lifetime guarantee. In practice the item that rescues a trip is almost never the expensive one, because the problems that actually derail a journey are small, boring and cheap to solve in advance.

Get the sizing right before the brand

The single most valuable property of a cabin bag is that it fits the allowance of the airline you actually fly. Not the generous one, the strict one. A bag that has to be checked at the gate costs a fee and the time, every single trip, and no amount of build quality compensates.

Measure against the tightest allowance you are likely to meet, including wheels and handles, which the published dimensions of many bags quietly exclude.

The small things that do the work

A power bank. The most common way a modern trip goes badly is a dead phone holding your boarding pass, your map and your booking. This is the highest-value item on the list by a distance.

A universal adapter with more than one port. One adapter that charges three things beats three adapters, and it removes the nightly negotiation over the single socket behind the bed.

Packing cubes. They do not create space, despite the claim. What they do is let you find one item without unpacking the bag, which is what actually goes wrong in a small room.

A refillable bottle. Pays for itself inside two days almost anywhere, and removes a recurring small errand.

A basic first aid and medication pouch. Plasters, painkillers, and anything you take regularly. Sourcing any of these in an unfamiliar place at an inconvenient hour is the definition of a solvable problem you did not solve.

What is worth paying more for

Two things. Wheels, if you are buying a wheeled case, because they are the first component to fail and the one that cannot be worked around. And straps, on anything you carry on your back for hours.

Everything else on this list is inexpensive by nature, and the premium versions do not solve a different problem. They solve the same one, in nicer packaging.

The packing rule that survives contact

Pack for the trip you are actually taking, not the one in the photographs. Most people bring too many clothes and too few of the small items above, then spend money on the trip replacing exactly the things they left out.
