When people work out whether they can afford a dog, they usually price the food and stop. Food is rarely the problem. The monthly figure that catches people out is assembled from six or seven smaller lines, most of which do not arrive until the second or third month.
Setting it out plainly is more useful than any amount of encouragement, so here is the shape of it.
The lines people plan for
Food is the obvious one and scales with size more steeply than most expect. A large breed can eat three times what a small one does.
Insurance is the second, and it is the line most worth not economising on. The premium is predictable; the bill it protects against is not.
The lines people forget
Preventative treatment. Worming and flea treatment are small, recurring and easy to leave out of a mental budget. Skipping them is a false economy that arrives later as a much larger vet bill.
Replacement of consumables. Leads fray, beds flatten, toys are destroyed. An enthusiastic dog goes through more of these than anyone expects in year one.
Grooming. Entirely breed-dependent. Some coats need professional attention every eight weeks, some need almost nothing. This single factor can change the monthly total more than the food does, and it is worth checking before choosing a breed rather than after.
Time you cannot cover. Daycare, a walker, or boarding while you are away. Occasional, but large when it lands.
Where spending less genuinely works
Three categories reward buying carefully rather than expensively.
Bowls, brushes and basic grooming tools. These are simple objects. A stainless steel bowl is a stainless steel bowl. There is very little a premium version does better.
Toys, bought on the right axis. The thing to pay for is chew resistance, not brand. A cheap durable toy outlasts an expensive soft one many times over, and the expensive soft one is usually destroyed within the week.
Beds, once you know the dog. Buy something modest first. Many dogs turn out to prefer a specific shape, or the sofa, and discovering that with an inexpensive bed is far better than with a premium one.
Where it does not
Leads, harnesses and anything load-bearing. These are the items where failure has a consequence that is not financial. Buy those once and buy them properly.
Owning a dog well is affordable for most households. It is affordable more easily when the number you planned around was the real one.
